Handbook

Attendance

If a student is to adequately comprehend the schoolwork required of him/her, it is extremely important that regular school attendance be maintained. Students absent more than 5 days can begin to develop gaps in their subject matter knowledge.

The building principal, attendance clerk and child’s teacher will monitor attendance and report any inconsistencies should that action be necessary.

Truancy will be reported. A child is truant if he/she is of compulsory school age and is not enrolled in school. A child is truant if he/she is of compulsory school age and is enrolled, but inexcusably absent 5 or more days in any one semester. When a student is consistently tardy, truancy may also be reported.  Sumner County has an attendance policy requiring the school to refer students with excessive absences and tardiness to the attendance officer.

Absences

Parents are requested to phone the school when a student will be absent for any reason. Prior notification of a student's absence allows us to maintain a better accounting of all students' whereabouts. The office hours are 7:00 to 3:15.

We discourage the scheduling of family vacations during the school year. Each absence from school can adversely affect the student's academic and social development. Please make every attempt to schedule vacations and trips when students are on vacations from school.  However, if you must take a family trip it will be counted as an unexcused absence unless it is pre-approved by the principal.

Even if you call the school to notify us of a child’s absence, a student returning to school after any period of absenteeism, must bring a written excuse from their parents or legal guardian stating the specific reason for the absence. Excused absences will be given for doctor and dentist appointments, pre-approved travel with family, funeral, illness, emergencies and such other occasions as may be deemed appropriate by the school administration. Unexcused absences will be handled as per administrative and Board of Education policy.

Students attending night activities must attend school on the day of the activity. The building principal may make exceptions to this rule.

Check In and Out of Office

Any student arriving after 7:40 or leaving before 2:40 must check in or out of the office. A sign-out sheet is provided for authorized parent or guardian. A student may not leave without permission through the office.

Perfect Attendance

Students with a record of no absences, tardiness, or early dismissals will be recognized at the end of each six weeks. Cumulative recognition for the year will also be made for these students. Recognition will also be made for students with no absences.

Tardy and Dismissal

If the attendance pattern shows a student is absence, tardy or being dismissed early a few days each week or there is some other pattern to the absences or tardiness, the school will notify the parent.  We will work with parents to ensure consistent attendance. If absences or tardiness are noted to be excessive and inappropriate they will be recorded as unexcused. Excessive tardiness will be reported along with unexcused absences to the Sumner County Attendance Office.
