Handbook

Illness

During the year, students may come into contact with any of several infectious illnesses. Because of this, it is important that children with communicable diseases, including the common cold, are kept home until they are well enough to return to and function adequately in school. Also, this reduces the danger of spreading diseases on an epidemic proportion among the school population.

The following are recommended guidelines to be observed with communicable diseases:

Disease

Exclusion from School

Chicken Pox

7 days following eruption of sores

Infectious Hepatitis

14 days following onset of illness

Measles (Rubeola)

5 days after rash appears

Mumps

Until swelling is gone

Pink Eye

24 hours on antibiotic eye drops and no discharge

German Measles (Rubella)

5 days after rash has appeared

Fever

No fever for 24 hours without Tylenol

There is a school nurse assigned to Clyde Riggs Elementary School one day a week.  We can contact her if needed during the rest of the week.

1.      If a child has a temperature above 99.8 or is experiencing continued discomfort or pain, the family will be notified.  If an accident or injury occurs at school we will treat as needed and notify the family.  It is essential for us to have emergency information and phone numbers on file in the office so we may contact you as needed.  Please keep this information updated as changes occur during the year.

2.      Only the nurse or trained office personnel will give prescribed medication to students.  Proper forms are required by the state to allow the school to administer medication.

3.      All prescribed medication must be in the original prescription bottle with child’s name and dosage to administer.  Over the counter medications must be accompanied with proper forms and the original bottle unopened.

4.      Parents are encouraged to call the school whenever there is a health-related problem.
